Last night we went to the Climate Change discussion at the Kennedy Center.
We were early so we went up to the terrace level to take in the pretty views. It was a bit cloudy and dusk-y but still gorgeous. Went back to the spot Sketchy proposed to me almost a year ago! Gah, time is flying by and we're never going to get married. 5 Year Engagement part II. lol
We then walked around some of the exhibits for the Nordic Cool Event.
Above is an explanation of the below picture. Basically someone took a picture of 52 waterfalls in Iceland. They then put on film paper and encased in glass. Each of those metal bars below pulled out and played the sound of that particular waterfall's rushing water. It was really neat.
Waterfall pull-out bars that played sound and showed waterfall picture
There was an exhibit with applications made by nordic folks. I did not realize Angry Bird was created by a nordic individual
Of course there were Legos.
The talk itself was super disappointing and here's why:
- The speaker was really nervous the entire time. He was clearly a normal older photojournalist from Greenland who had never given a presentation in his life. He basically said this at the beginning. I spent most of the event feeling bad for him. He was shakey and hardly said many words. There was hardly any analysis of what we were seeing.
- What we were seeing -- no photos. It was all videos of a few people in Greenland who had been affected by climate change
- It seemed very surface level -- I thought it would be a more intellectually sound event
- Unorganized and disconnected -- there was no flow in the presentation. The speakers were all over the place with their views on climate change in the region.
It was a disappointment because I was extremely excited about the event from its description. Then I felt like I wasted 1.5 hours of my life. I thought I was going to see climate change in a Greenland region through years of photography. Not.
The festival itself had pretty cool exhibits though, and I love the Kennedy Center, so the outing in general was not a fail.
Today Sketchy stayed home to catch up on some sleep and I've been doing a lot of catch-up on life. I
'm prepping some things for the new job which starts tomorrow -- sigh, vacation over so soon.
We'll be solidifying hotel situation for engagement and hopefully finalizing invitations tonight! Can't wait to have all those ducks in a row. Unofficial deadline of April 1 to be completely done with engagement set-up.
I think that's all for now. I had been really behind on blogging the past week, but all caught up now which feels good!
